Choosing an Astrologer or Tarot ReaderHere are some of the things that can help you make an informed decision when choosing and evaluating Astrologers and Tarot Readers.
What to Look For Ethical Standards – In almost every instance, Astrologers and other readers are completely legitimate, and are no more likely to be unethical then people in any other profession. They should be upholding the same professional standards of client privileged information as other people in other “helping” professions. If they make claims that seem to be too farfetched, or fantastic, don’t use them. If they won’t tell you how much a reading will cost, or are being evasive, move on. You can find out through your local alternative practitioners, health food stores, or best, through friends, who they recommend.Technical Knowledge – Technical expertise is hard to judge without having a reading first. Using referrals is probably the best way of finding out. If you sense a Reader doesn’t seem to know very much about what they are doing, they may be beginners who have not reached a high level of experience yet. If you are seeing a professional, and are paying professional rates, expect them to know their stuff. Interpreting Skills – This is of prime concern. A Reader may possess a large amount of technical knowledge, but may not be able to translate it into language that you can understand. If you don ’t grasp the information, what good is it? Some Readers just rattle off a lot of disconnected verbiage, and leave the interpreting entirely up to you. During a reading, don’t be afraid to ask them to explain something in a clearer manner. Counseling Skills – Most Readers have good counseling skills, and may have degrees in counseling or psychology. However, they still vary greatly in their counseling abilities. Some people don’t seem to mind if a reader goes on an ego trip, or tells a client what they “should” do. Readers who tell you what is “going to happen” are horrible counselors—they dis-empower you—giving you no choice in the matter. Unfortunately, some people want to be told what to do! However, most readers will be reluctant to deal with these people. Readers should demonstrate a sense of compassion and empathy about your concerns. If they don’t give you the feeling that they care about you, they probably don’t. One of the most important counseling attributes is a Readers ability to listen. It may not seem important, but the dialogue between the two of you is critical for having a good and useful reading. What to Ask Before Making Your Choice Professional Background – In general, almost all Readers will have no “official” certification. There are few professional organizations and certification programs for either Astrologers or Tarot Readers. Most of them have come by their expertise through diligent study and practice. Their intuitive gifts are developed like any other skills, by practice, learning to trust their intuition, and gaining experience. A professional Reader is almost always someone who has been reading for a long time, usually decades. Services Provided – Find out what type of services they provide. Tell them what you are looking for, and ask them to explain what they will cover during your reading. Most Astrologers will tape the session for you as a part of your reading. Tarot Readers should agree to tape the reading if you ask them to. Fees – There is a wide range of fees for both Astrologers and Tarot Readers. For an Astrological reading, it may range from about $50 to $200, or more, for a full reading which usually lasts from one to two hours. Shorter, and/or less expensive Astrological readings are usually for those who have had a reading with the same Astrologer before. With Tarot, plan on spending about $2-3 per minute. This is only a guide. If someone charges too little, it is likely that they are inexperienced, and you will likely get what you pay for—not much. If the fee is exorbitant (100’s of dollars for a short reading—say 15-30 minutes) you are most likely not going to get your money’s worth. If they are a “Reader to the Stars,” they are going to charge you the same as them—you don’t need to spend that much for an excellent reading. Also, be careful of those who promise to “remove negative energy” that they say is “surrounding you,” and charging you high prices to do so—they are frauds.
